This time of year, is filled with ‘new you’ posts or how to better yourselves, be better, glow up, move up etc. It can feel overwhelming and induce feelings of inadequacy, or the idea that who you are or where you are isn’t good enough. In a society that seems to be obsessed with self-improvement, #goals and achievement, the pressure to change can be panic inducing.
Now there isn’t anything inherently wrong with wanting to better yourself, to grow, to develop or to want more for yourself. The fact of the matter is that nothing ever stays the same, things are in a constant state of change, but taking the time to notice the changes, the psychological movements, the small wins, the moments of growth, is something different. If we are constantly looking at the bigger picture, the big goals, big life achievements, then we are missing all of the little things along the way.
This year I do have things I want to strive for, I have ideas of what I want, where my practice is going, but I also want to be receptive to the small details. I want to notice, and take it all in. I want to be present and not constantly thinking about what my next move needs to be. I want to notice when I respond to a trigger in a different way, I want to notice when I manage a daily habit that I enjoy and not just focus on when I don’t manage it. I want to notice when I have a moment of true connection with a client, or with a friend. I want to notice all the small ways I change every day and pat myself on the back for them.
2023 is the year of noticing the small things.
